Installation: Interface Australia Head Office, 101 Chalmers Street, Sydney, Australia
Product: Various new collections
The Rail Institute building at 101 Chalmers Street, Sydney is a prime example of how old architecture and new world thinking can combine to create a new green icon.
In September 2010, it was awarded a 5 Star Green Star - Office Interiors v1.1 rating, due to its dramatic upgrade driven by Interface, who has leased 80 per cent of the building for its Sydney headquarters. 101 Chalmers Street is only the second heritage building in Australia to achieve this status.
Originally built in the 1890s as a social and educational facility for railway employees, 101 Chalmers Street was listed as a heritage building in 1980. Interface was the first tenant to demand this level of 'greenness'. The re-design also needed to adhere with the company's sustainability ethos.
While maintaining the heritage structure of the building, all fabrics used in the interior came from recycled and recyclable materials and Good Environmental Choice Australia products were used where possible. The elements of carpeted flooring were fitted with Interface carpet tiles which are 100 per cent climate neutral and are held in place with TacTiles adhesive stickers which use no carpet glue and have a low volatile organic compound (VOC) content. The carpets are also eligible for Interface's ReEntry scheme, a take-back program that recycles carpet tiles.
