Transparent Sustainability

Interface publishes Environmental Product Declarations (EPD's) ensuring complete transparency of environmental impacts.

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a detailed report of product ingredients and environmental impacts that occur over the entire life cycle of a product. Similar to the way in which food nutrition tables reveal scores in health categories like sugars, fat and salt, EPDs detail the impacts products have in environmental categories like scarce resource depletion, energy use, waste generation, air, soil and water emissions.

Importantly, an EPD is not just a green claim or a promise. EPDs reveal information usually considered confidential by companies. They provide detailed product information in a consistent way, certified to a public international standard, and verified by a credible third party. EPDs go beyond labels and claims and provide complete transparency.

Forbo uses Life Cycle Assessment as the independent methodology of measuring their impact on the environment.
Their target is:

To continuously minimise the environmental impact of Forbo Flooring Systems as measured by the weighted categories in our independently verified Life Cycle Assessment measurement system by 25% before the end of 2015 (cf2009).

Standardized within ISO 14040, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is defined as a compilation and evaluation of the inputs and outputs and the potential environmental impacts of a product system throughout its life cycle, a cradle-to-grave-approach. Measurement against the specific impact categories focuses on efforts for reduction; it is the basis for Forbo's green development and for overall performance.

Environmental Product Declarations (EPD)

Forbo Flooring Systems has published VB>Environmental Product Declarations for our individual floor covering products. An EPD presents quantified environmental data for a product, based on information from a life cycle assessment (LCA). An EPD is a report verified by the European Resilient Flooring Manufacturers Institute (ERFMI) that summarises and explains the data generated from an LCA.
