Bringing a new learning block to life at Campbells Bay School meant designing a space that felt distinctly theirs, not just another classroom building, but an extension of the school’s identity. With limited land and a stand of protected Pohutukawa trees nearby, every design move had to work hard, serving both function and community values. Inside, that same level of care extended to the finishes, especially the flooring, which became a key tool in shaping how students experience and move through the space.
Colour plays a key role in creating identity and belonging. The school chose distinct colour themes for each cluster of classrooms, helping students feel connected to their own space within the wider building. From there, the team explored Inzide’s flooring range to find carpet tiles that reflected these colour palettes, and with such a broad selection available, matching the themes was a straightforward process.
Carpet tiles from Interface’s Flow Brights and Stripes Collection were used throughout the learning block, with colours like Ocean, Sunset, and Seagrass chosen to align with the school's designated themes for each classroom cluster. These colour selections were applied thoughtfully across the floor plan to reflect the identity of each teaching zone and create a strong sense of place for both students and staff. The flooring not only adds energy and character to the interiors, but also plays a practical role in supporting the flow and organisation of the open-plan layout.
In areas like breakout spaces, tea bays and wet zones, the flooring choices were guided by practicality. The selected products offer strong acoustic performance and are easy to clean, essential for a high-traffic primary school. Rather than being a background feature, the flooring is part of what brings the building to life, colourful, durable and carefully considered to reflect the way Campbells Bay School teaches and learns.
Beyond performance and aesthetics, sustainability was front of mind. The use of Interface® carpet tiles, known for their carbon neutral lifecycle and closed-loop manufacturing, aligns with the school’s wider environmental efforts, including stormwater filtering and passive ventilation strategies. The result is a learning environment that respects its roots, embraces innovation, and places student wellbeing at its heart, from the ground up.
