In 2023, Onehunga Primary School celebrated the completion of Stage 1 of their ambitious redevelopment masterplan in collaboration with Jasmax. The new 1,990sqm four-storey vertical teaching and learning building, now one of the tallest primary schools in New Zealand. Designed to seamlessly integrate with the community and accommodate the school's growing population, this structure stands as a testament to modern educational design principles.
The interior ambiance was carefully curated with a soothing colour palette from Forbo’s Marmoleum and Sphera Collections. Soft sage greens, pale blues, and greys, renowned for their calming effects, were chosen to promote concentration, imagination, and a relaxed atmosphere conducive to learning. These cool tones were complemented by vibrant rooms featuring bright yellow vinyl, evoking energy, creativity, and confidence. Additionally, these colours draw inspiration from nature, forging a connection between indoor spaces and the outdoors, which is beneficial for young learners. This thoughtful use of colour theory plays a crucial role in stimulating creativity and enhancing concentration among the students.
Given the school's unique architectural layout with four levels, special attention was given to the stairwells. These transitional spaces were adorned with norament 926 Grano by nora, a flooring solution renowned for its exceptional durability in high-traffic environments. Crafted from dense, vulcanised rubber with a hammerblown, scuff-resistant surface, norament 926 Grano effortlessly withstands heavy foot traffic and maintains its integrity against wear and tear. Beyond durability, this rubber flooring enhances comfort underfoot with a slight cushioning effect and improves acoustic comfort by absorbing sound, creating a serene and comfortable environment, particularly ideal for stairwells.
Jasmax's design philosophy for Onehunga Primary School exemplifies a holistic approach to educational architecture, where physical spaces are meticulously crafted to support the school's educational mission and foster a dynamic learning environment. By incorporating the thoughtfully curated colour palette, Jasmax reflects a nuanced understanding of how hues can influence and enhance learning environments through colour psychology and design cohesion, contributing to the school’s functionality and educational efficacy.
