Our recent collaboration with Architectural Designer, Phil Checketts and Interior Designer, Jaimee Pryde, on Gore Medical Centre creates an environment that is designed with patient experience and well-being in mind, pulling in important learnings from the human cantered design principles.
The mission: To cultivate a space that instils a sense of tranquillity and care from the moment one steps foot inside.
Central to the design narrative is the motif of curves—characterised by their inherently soothing effect. These curved floorplates are defined with a combination of plush carpet tile and smooth Marmoleum surfaces in different patterns and colourways– the mix of soft and hard creating a comforting textural synergy in the space. The curved motif is reflected heavily in the Step This Way carpet tile in the reception/waiting area in a sophisticated colourway of warm grey shades. Its striking geometric curved patterning, adding a richness to the space. The flow of the curves is delicately broken up with sections of Marmoleum in a warm grey tone and a pop of colour in the soft sage green, adding warmth to the space while offering moments of respite from the pattern. Marmoleum was the natural choice for this fit-out for its natural and anti-bacteriostatic qualities making it the safe, healthy choice. With a texture that beckons touch and a palette that evokes nature, this lighter, more organic flavour in the space not only fosters a connection to the natural world but also promotes a sense of well-being and tranquillity among patients and staff alike.
A second carpet tile, Step In Time, leads patients to the medical rooms with its gentle stippled pattern, still reminiscent of the curved motif but offering a calmer and reassuring transition for the patients as they move into the medical rooms.
Practical considerations also come into play for this project, with the inclusion of a generously sized walk-off mat in Step Repeat, where the two shades Iron and Onyx intersect in a curved pattern that follows the curve of the carpet tile and Marmoleum in the reception space. The inclusion of this walk-off mat was designed with the context of the area in mind, this addition ensures peace of mind for those arriving in gumboots, protecting the carpet tile and vinyl from debris and damage. Additionally, as a medical centre, the resilience of high-quality vinyl was essential, offering superior protection against scuffs and scratches, a hygienic flooring solution, and minimal residual indentation from heavy medical equipment in the examination rooms.
In essence, our collaboration with Phil Checketts and Jaimee Pryde at Gore Medical Centre embodies a holistic approach to design – one where aesthetics seamlessly intertwines with functionality, and where every detail, from material selection to colour palette, is curated to foster an environment of healing, care, and comfort.
