Specifier: CPRW

Artist: Pāora Puru

Contactor: Prescott Flooring

Product: Forbo’s Eternal Custom Vinyl Collection, Interface’s Net Effect Collection, and Composure Collection.

At the heart of the Manukau West Annex Building lies a flooring transformation that is a testament to the intersection of art and design. Crafted from Forbo's Eternal custom digital printed vinyl, the flooring features the striking 'Pātiki' pattern, a cultural motif laden with profound significance to the history of the area. Translating to ‘flounder’, Pātiki symbolizes not only the abundance of water resources (water foods) but also embodies values of welcome, hospitality, and generosity deeply rooted in Māori culture.

The intricate Pātiki design, by artist Pāora Puru of Ngāti Te Ata Waiohua, pays respect to the rich food sources of the Puhinui Stream and the Manukau Harbour, cherished taonga (treasures) of the Waiohua iwi (tribe). Its coloured motifs, a fusion of red and black against a grey backdrop, serve a dual purpose. Not only do they infuse the space with cultural significance, but they also serve as way-finding elements, guiding occupants through the building with intention. The bold red elements of the pattern mark entrance and exit zones, seamlessly blending functionality with aesthetics.

The installation of this vinyl masterpiece was no small feat. With rolls spanning four meters in width and an alignment pattern stretching an impressive thirty meters, it demanded meticulous precision and craftsmanship, a testament to the dedication of the installers at Prescott Flooring.

In addition to the striking Pātiki vinyl flooring, the Manukau Hub boasts a foundation of sustainability and respect for both Māori culture and the environment through Interface's carpet tiles. The Net Effects collection in colour Black Sea as the primary field tile in meeting rooms and collaborative spaces not only provides an organic and textural base but also embodies a commitment to sustainability. By using recycled materials, Interface's sustainable carpet tiles honour the Māori values of kaitiakitanga (environmental stewardship) and respect for the land, also ensuring that the space remains harmonious with its surroundings for generations to come. Interface’s Composure Collection in colour Eucalyptus is featured in the council chambers, with its deep olive-green hue serving as a symbol of balance and harmony with nature. By choosing materials that prioritize environmental responsibility, the Manukau Hub honours both the land, the environment, and the cultural heritage of the Waiohua iwi, embodying a harmonious balance between modern design and traditional values.

This collaboration between Inzide, CPRW Architects, and Pāora Puru transcends the conventional boundaries of architectural design, seamlessly intertwining cultural heritage, functionality, and sustainability. Through the thoughtful integration of flooring elements, the Manukau Hub emerges not merely as a utilitarian space but as a living testament to the enduring spirit and resilience of indigenous communities and their profound connection to the land. A special thanks to the contributions of artist Pāora Puru, whose artistic vision breathed life into the very fabric of the building, enriching the space with layers of meaning and significance that will resonate with all who walk the halls.
