With Otago Polytech bursting at the seams through its increasing roll take and no new buildings (watch this space) the property team needed to be very creative in their space allocation. Old disused classrooms have been revitalized and the space between two buildings has been turned into an atrium to provide “An Entrance” into the Polytech with access from the Atrium then being provided to the two separate buildings. Smart use of space, smart use of resource.
A key element to the design was wayfinding and telling a visual story about the polytech, its origins and its place in Dunedin.
Mason & Wales were quick to look to INZIDE (suppliers of Interface carpet tile And Forbo resilient vinyl) to gain flooring advice and inspiration. The networks story was very compelling (paying local villagers in Indonesia to retrieve discarded fishing nets that were polluting their fishing grounds which were then used to make the Net Effects carpet tile) and spoke to sustainability as a key tenet behind Otago Polytech.
Plus the existing benefits of Interface carpet tile were very compelling
