In the heart of Spotswood College lies Block L, a flooring design that speaks volumes about innovation, tradition, and the seamless integration of culture into learning environments. Initially a soft organic floor design was planned but soon transformed into what you see in the photos, a design that pays homage to the rich cultural tapestry of New Zealand.
At the core of this design lies Interface's Urban Retreat Collection. This collection forms the canvas upon which a dynamic pattern reminiscent of the traditional Māori Pātiki pattern unfolds.
The strategic placement of the dark Charcoal tiles along the edges of the plan serves a dual purpose: not only do they withstand the rigors of heavy footfall, but they also anchor the space with a sense of strength and resilience. In contrast, the light grey Lichen tiles, strategically positioned towards the centre under meeting zones, draws attention to these communal spaces, fostering a sense of openness and inclusivity. This intentional juxtaposition of light and dark talks to the he huarahi whakamarama narrative.
Echoing the rhythmic flow of the traditional Pātiki pattern, this diamond effect was achieved by using the transitional tile, UR101 cut on a diagonal to create a soft transition between the charcoal base (UR102) and Lichen highlight (UR103). The high level of installation skill, time, and attention to detail was brilliantly completed by the team at Classic Carpets, Flooring Extra.
Add in Interface’s innovative carpet tile features, such as Anti-microbial protection (Intersept) and soiling and stain protection (protekt2) with the full performance 15 years warranty and you have an extremely fit for purpose floor.
Spotswood College’s flooring design is a testament to the power of collaboration, where tradition and innovation converge to create spaces that not only inspire but also endure. As the students traverse the space, they’re not just walking on floors, they’re stepping onto a narrative of culture, creativity, and connection.
Congratulations to the team at Boon Architects on an amazing result! Thank you for using Interface flooring for your project.
