In a groundbreaking venture that seamlessly integrates sustainable design, cultural heritage, and environmental responsibility, Whangārei District proudly unveils its new $48 million civic building. A collaborative effort by Team Architects, this architectural marvel is more than just a structure; it's a testament to the power of design in shaping a space that fosters connectivity, productivity, and well-being.

Upon entering the civic building, visitors are enveloped in an atmosphere that celebrates New Zealand's rich biodiversity and indigenous cultural roots. The meticulously curated interior design, blends Interface's Biosphere Collection and Human Nature Collection in meeting rooms and office spaces. Gaze Commercial chose Interface flooring for its sustainable accreditations, aligning with the project's strong sustainability focus.

Team Architect’s design concept, inspired by the natural world, sought a floor finish that embodied these characteristics. The choice of Interface's Biosphere Collection, with textures derived from landscapes, sky, and sea, resonates with all cultures. Nature-inspired designs paying homage to New Zealand's native flora and fauna are intricately carved into the walls, inviting visitors to appreciate the timeless beauty of the land and its people. The strategic placement of greenery promotes well-being and rejuvenation, emphasising the importance of sustainability and biophilic design in the urban setting.

The Human Nature Collection and Works Collection from Interface emerged as ideal flooring partners for creating a biophilic interior. The Human Nature Collection, with its nature-inspired patterns and colours, delineates functional sections within the building, providing visual cues for wayfinding and zoning. The Works Collection, featuring Works Eon and Works Facet, enhances the spatial experience by creating walkways and corridor-like areas. Skillful use of carpet tiles establishes boundaries, adding depth and character to interior spaces.

Different colours of the Human Nature Collection across various levels create a delightful division between work areas, establishing a unique identity for each floor while retaining the overarching theme of nature's embrace. Each floor of the Whangarei Civic Centre reflects an element of the natural world with the Biosphere Collection being used on the staff floors and Human Nature and Aerial Flying Colours Collection on the ground floor. The Biosphere Collection's colourways tie into these elements, reinforcing wayfinding in the building. Positive reactions followed the installation of the Interface’s ranges.

Team Architects, in collaboration with the local Hapu, infused cultural narratives into the building and landscape design. Patterns on the wall finish align with natural themes, reflects the region's cultural heritage. Interface carpet tiles offer:

- 15-year full-performance warranty, including castor chairs

- Life-time anti-microbial

- Closed-loop recyclability at end-of-life.

- Carbon neutrality for the full life cycle of the floor

Congratulations to Team Architects on an exceptional result.
